Texas Toast Grilled Cheese Air Fryer - Crispy, Cheesy Comfort in Minutes

Prep Time5 minutes
Cook Time8 minutes
Total Time13 minutes
Servings: 2 servings

Ingredients

  • 4 slices Texas toast (thick-cut, either plain or garlic-buttered)
  • 4–6 slices cheese (American, cheddar, Colby Jack, or a mix)
  • 2–3 tablespoons softened butter (or mayonnaise)
  • Optional add-ins: sliced tomato (patted dry), cooked bacon, thin ham, caramelized onions, pickled jalapeños
  • Optional seasonings: garlic powder, black pepper, pinch of smoked paprika
  • Nonstick spray (if your air fryer basket tends to stick)

Instructions

  • Preheat the air fryer to 360°F (182°C). A hot basket helps the bread crisp quickly without drying out the middle.
  • Prep the bread. Spread a thin, even layer of softened butter or mayo on one side of each Texas toast slice. This will be the outer side that gets crispy.
  • Assemble the sandwiches. Place one slice, buttered side down, add 2–3 cheese slices (or a generous handful of shredded cheese), then top with another bread slice, buttered side up. If using add-ins, keep layers thin and dry to avoid sogginess.
  • Grease the basket lightly. If sticking is a concern, mist the basket with nonstick spray. Do not saturate; a little goes a long way.
  • Air fry the sandwiches at 360°F for 4–5 minutes. Check at the 4-minute mark. The top should be lightly golden and cheese beginning to melt.
  • Flip carefully and continue 3–4 minutes. Use a spatula to turn the sandwiches. Cook until both sides are golden brown and the cheese is fully melted. Total time is typically 7–9 minutes, depending on thickness and your air fryer model.
  • Rest for 1 minute. Let the sandwiches sit on a cutting board. This helps the cheese set slightly so it doesn’t gush out when sliced.
  • Slice and serve. Cut on the diagonal for classic grilled cheese vibes. Serve with tomato soup, a simple salad, or chips.
