Preheat the air fryer: Set to 350°F (175°C) for 3 minutes. Preheating helps the bread crisp instead of drying out.
Prep the bread: Spread a thin layer of softened butter or brush oil on one side of each slice.
This is the outer side that will crisp up.
Spread Nutella: On the unbuttered side, add 1–2 tablespoons of Nutella per slice. Keep it about 1/4 inch from the edges to reduce drips.
Add optional toppings: Lay on banana or strawberry slices, a pinch of cinnamon, or a few chopped nuts. Don’t overload or it may slide off.
Single toast or sandwich:
Open-faced: One slice with Nutella facing up.
Sandwich: Top with another slice, buttered side facing out.
Air fry: Place the toast in a single layer in the basket.
Cook at 350°F (175°C) for 4–6 minutes. Open-faced needs 3–5 minutes; sandwiches need 4–6 minutes. Check at the 3-minute mark.
Watch for doneness: The edges should be golden and crisp.
The Nutella should look glossy and slightly melty. If using fruit, it should be warmed through.
Finish and serve: Carefully remove with tongs. Optionally dust with powdered sugar, add flaky sea salt, drizzle honey, or add a few fresh fruit slices.
Serve immediately.
