Preheat the air fryer to 390°F (200°C) for 3–5 minutes.
A hot basket helps the cod brown and release easily.
Pat the cod dry with paper towels. Removing surface moisture helps the seasoning stick and prevents steaming.
Mix the seasoning: In a small bowl, combine garlic powder, paprika, onion powder, thyme or oregano, salt, and pepper. Add a pinch of cayenne if you like heat.
Oil and season: Lightly brush or rub the fillets with olive oil on both sides.
Sprinkle the seasoning mix evenly over the fish. Add lemon zest on top for a bright finish.
Prepare the basket: Lightly spray the air fryer basket with nonstick spray. This reduces sticking and helps with cleanup.
Arrange the fillets in a single layer in the basket, spacing them so air can circulate.
If your basket is small, cook in batches rather than crowding.
Air fry for 7–10 minutes, depending on thickness. As a guideline, 1-inch-thick fillets usually take 9–10 minutes. Thinner pieces may be done around 7–8 minutes.
Check for doneness: The cod should flake easily with a fork and reach an internal temperature of 145°F (63°C).
If not done, air fry in 1–2 minute increments until ready.
Finish with lemon: Squeeze fresh lemon over the fish right before serving. Garnish with chopped parsley if you like.
Serve immediately with sides like roasted veggies, a simple salad, quinoa, or air-fried potatoes.
