Ingredients

  • Tilapia fillets: About 4 fillets (4–6 ounces each), fresh or thawed.
  • Olive oil: 1–2 tablespoons, just enough to lightly coat.
  • Lemon: 1 lemon for zest and wedges.
  • Garlic powder: 1 teaspoon.
  • Onion powder: 1 teaspoon.
  • Paprika: 1 teaspoon (smoked or sweet).
  • Salt and black pepper: About 1 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper, to taste.
  • Optional add-ins: 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano or Italian seasoning; pinch of cayenne for heat; 1 teaspoon Cajun or Old Bay for a quick twist.
  • Fresh herbs (optional): Chopped parsley or dill for serving.

Instructions

  • Preheat the air fryer: Set it to 400°F (200°C) for 3–5 minutes so the basket is hot when the fish goes in.
  • Pat the tilapia dry: Use paper towels to remove surface moisture. This helps the seasoning stick and promotes light crisping.
  • Season: In a small bowl, mix salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika. Add dried herbs or cayenne if using. Lightly brush or rub the fillets with olive oil, then coat all sides with the spice blend. Zest half the lemon over the fish for brightness.
  • Arrange in the basket: Place the fillets in a single layer, seasoning side up. Do not overcrowd—work in batches if needed.
  • Air fry: Cook at 400°F (200°C) for 6–9 minutes, depending on thickness. Thin fillets may be done at 6 minutes; thicker ones may need up to 9.
  • Check for doneness: The fish should flake easily with a fork and reach an internal temperature of 145°F (63°C). The edges should look slightly crisp.
  • Finish and serve: Squeeze fresh lemon juice over the fillets. Top with chopped parsley or dill. Serve with veggies, a side salad, or rice.
