Ingredients

  • 4 tilapia fillets about 4–6 ounces each, fresh or thawed
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or avocado oil
  • Zest of 1 lemon
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice plus extra wedges for serving
  • 1 teaspoon coarse kosher salt or 3/4 teaspoon fine salt
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika sweet or smoked
  • Optional: 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes for mild heat
  • Optional garnish: chopped fresh parsley or dill
  • Cooking spray for the air fryer basket

Instructions

  • Preheat the air fryer: Set it to 400°F (200°C) and let it heat for 3–5 minutes. A hot basket helps the fish cook evenly and release easily.
  • Prep the fish: Pat the tilapia dry on both sides with paper towels. Dry fish browns better and won’t steam.
  • Mix the seasoning: In a small bowl, combine salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, and lemon zest.
  • Oil and season: Brush or rub the fillets with olive oil. Sprinkle the seasoning mix evenly on both sides.
  • Drizzle with fresh lemon juice.
  • Prepare the basket: Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray to prevent sticking.
  • Arrange the fillets: Place tilapia in a single layer, leaving space between pieces. Work in batches if needed; don’t overcrowd.
  • Air fry: Cook at 400°F (200°C) for 7–9 minutes, depending on thickness. Tilapia is thin and cooks quickly.
  • Check doneness: The fish should flake easily with a fork and be opaque throughout.
  • An instant-read thermometer should register 145°F (63°C) at the thickest part.
  • Finish with lemon: Squeeze extra lemon over the fillets right before serving. Garnish with parsley or dill if you like.
  • Serve: Pair with steamed rice, quinoa, roasted asparagus, simple salad, or garlic green beans.
