Total Time13 minutes
Servings: 2 servings

Ingredients

  • Bread: 2 slices of sturdy sandwich bread (sourdough, country white, or brioche hold up well)
  • Ham: 3–4 ounces thinly sliced deli ham (black forest, honey ham, or smoked)
  • Cheese: 2 slices (Swiss, cheddar, provolone, or American all melt beautifully)
  • Butter or mayo: 1–2 teaspoons to spread on the outside for crisping
  • Mustard: 1 teaspoon Dijon or yellow (optional, for tang)
  • Pickles or sliced tomato: Optional add-ins for texture and flavor
  • Black pepper: A pinch for seasoning
  • Parchment paper: Optional, to keep cheese drips off the basket

Instructions

  • Preheat the air fryer: Set to 370°F (188°C) for 2–3 minutes. A warm basket helps crisp the bread quickly.
  • Prep the bread: Spread a thin layer of butter or mayo on the outside of each slice. This is what gives you that golden crust.
  • Assemble the sandwich: On the unbuttered side of one slice, add a piece of cheese, layer the ham evenly, sprinkle a little black pepper, then top with the second slice of cheese. Finish with the second slice of bread, buttered side facing out. If you like, add a swipe of mustard or a few pickle slices inside.
  • Secure the sandwich: If your bread is thick or your ham is piled high, gently press the sandwich so it holds together. A toothpick through the center helps keep layers from sliding.
  • Air fry: Place the sandwich in the basket. Use a small piece of parchment under it if you worry about cheese drips. Cook for 4–6 minutes, flipping halfway, until the bread is golden and the cheese is melted.
  • Check and adjust: If the bread is browning too fast and the cheese isn’t melted yet, lower the temp to 350°F and cook 1–2 more minutes.
  • Rest and slice: Let the sandwich sit for 1 minute so the cheese settles. Slice in halves or triangles and serve hot.
