Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for 3–5 minutes.
A hot basket helps with browning.
Mix the meat: In a bowl, combine ground beef, salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and Worcestershire sauce. Gently mix with your hands until just combined. Don’t overwork it or the burgers can get tough.
Form the patties: Divide the meat into four equal portions.
Shape into patties about 3/4 inch thick and slightly wider than your buns. Press a small dimple in the center of each patty to prevent puffing.
Prep the basket: Lightly oil the air fryer basket if needed. Arrange patties in a single layer, leaving a bit of space around each one.
Cook in batches if necessary.
Air fry the first side: Cook for 6 minutes at 375°F (190°C).
Flip and finish: Flip the patties and cook another 4–6 minutes, depending on your preferred doneness. For reference: about 4 minutes for medium, 6 minutes for well-done. Use a thermometer for accuracy.
Add cheese: If using, place a slice on each patty during the last 30–60 seconds.
Close the air fryer to melt.
Toast the buns (optional): Remove the burgers and briefly toast buns in the air fryer at 350°F (175°C) for 1–2 minutes.
Assemble: Place patties on buns and add toppings and condiments. Serve immediately.
