Total Time22 minutes
Servings: 4 servings

Ingredients

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef, 80/20 (for juicy burgers)
  • 1 tsp kosher salt (or 3/4 tsp fine salt)
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder (optional, but adds depth)
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce (optional, for savory flavor)
  • 4 slices cheese (American, cheddar, or Swiss)
  • 4 burger buns (brioche, potato, or sesame)
  • Toppings: lettuce, tomato, red onion, pickles
  • Condiments: ketchup, mustard, mayo, special sauce
  • Oil spray (for the air fryer basket)

Instructions

  • Preheat the air fryer: Set it to 375°F (190°C) for 3–5 minutes. A hot basket helps form a better crust.
  • Season the beef: In a bowl, combine ground beef, salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and Worcestershire. Mix gently with your hands just until combined. Don’t overmix or the burgers will be tough.
  • Shape the patties: Divide into 4 equal portions (about 4 oz each). Form 1/2-inch-thick patties slightly wider than your buns. Press a small dimple in the center of each to prevent doming.
  • Prep the basket: Lightly spray the air fryer basket with oil to prevent sticking. You can also use perforated parchment made for air fryers.
  • Cook the first side: Place patties in a single layer, not touching. Air fry for 6 minutes.
  • Flip and finish: Flip the burgers and cook 3–5 more minutes, depending on thickness and your air fryer. For safety, aim for 160°F (71°C) internal temp for ground beef. Use an instant-read thermometer if you have one.
  • Add cheese: Top each patty with a slice of cheese and cook 30–60 seconds more, just until melted.
  • Toast the buns (optional): Remove burgers and quickly toast buns in the air fryer at 350°F (175°C) for 1–2 minutes.
  • Build your burger: Layer buns with sauce, lettuce, burger, tomato, onion, and pickles. Serve hot with your favorite sides.
