Air Fryer Grilled Onions - Sweet, Caramelized, and Easy

Prep Time10 minutes
Cook Time20 minutes
Total Time30 minutes
Servings: 4 servings

Ingredients

  • 2 large onions (yellow or sweet onions are ideal; red onions work for a sharper bite)
  • 1–1.5 tablespoons olive oil (or avocado oil)
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt (plus more to taste)
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Optional boosts: 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder, a pinch of smoked paprika, 1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar, or 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Optional finishing: Fresh thyme or parsley, a squeeze of lemon, or a pat of butter for gloss

Instructions

  • Preheat the air fryer: Set to 375°F (190°C). A warm basket helps the onions start caramelizing right away.
  • Prep the onions: Peel and trim the ends. Slice into 1/4-inch rings for classic strands or into wedges for chunkier “grilled” bites. Thicker cuts stay meatier; thinner cuts get softer and more jammy.
  • Season: In a bowl, toss onions with oil, salt, and pepper. Add any optional seasonings now. If using balsamic or Worcestershire, add just a little so the onions don’t steam too much.
  • Load the basket: Spread in an even layer. A little overlap is fine, but avoid a tall mound. For very full baskets, cook in two batches.
  • Air fry 8 minutes: Cook at 375°F. Pull the basket and stir or shake to promote even browning and prevent sticking.
  • Finish 6–10 minutes: Return to the air fryer and cook until the edges are browned and the centers are soft. Total time varies by thickness and onion type: expect 14–18 minutes.
  • Taste and adjust: Sprinkle a little more salt, add a squeeze of lemon, or melt in a small pat of butter for sheen and richness.
  • Serve: Pile onto burgers, tacos, grilled meats, or veggie bowls. They also shine on crostini with goat cheese or stirred into mashed potatoes.
