Ingredients

  • Sandwich bread: White, sourdough, or whole wheat—choose a sturdy slice.
  • Cheese: American, cheddar, Gruyère, provolone, or a mix. Aim for good meltability.
  • Butter or mayonnaise: For spreading on the outside of the bread. Mayo browns evenly.
  • Optional add-ins: Tomato slices, cooked bacon, caramelized onions, pesto, or mustard.
  • Optional seasoning: Pinch of garlic powder, black pepper, or a light sprinkle of Parmesan.

Instructions

  • Preheat the air fryer: Set it to 370°F (188°C) for 3–5 minutes. A hot basket helps the bread crisp quickly.
  • Prep the bread: Spread a thin, even layer of butter or mayonnaise on one side of each slice. The spread should face out to help with browning.
  • Assemble the sandwich: Place 1–2 slices of cheese (or about 1/2 cup shredded) between the unspread sides of the bread. Keep fillings minimal to avoid overflow.
  • Add optional extras: If using tomato or other moist add-ins, pat them dry and layer between the cheese slices. This keeps the bread from getting soggy.
  • Air fry the first side: Place the sandwich in the basket. If sticking is a concern, use a small piece of parchment with holes. Cook for 4 minutes.
  • Check and flip: Carefully flip the sandwich with tongs. If the top slice tried to lift, press gently to reseal. Cook for another 3–4 minutes, until golden and melty.
  • Adjust as needed: If your bread is thick or your cheese is slower to melt, lower the heat to 350°F (177°C) and add 1–2 minutes.
  • Rest before slicing: Let the sandwich sit for 1 minute. This helps the cheese settle and keeps it from oozing out.
  • Slice and serve: Cut diagonally for classic presentation. Pair with tomato soup, a green salad, or pickle spears.
