Ingredients

  • Bread: Sourdough, whole-grain, multigrain, rye, or gluten-free slices
  • Avocados: Ripe but not mushy (yields slightly to gentle pressure)
  • Lemon or lime: For brightness and to slow browning
  • Salt and black pepper: Fine sea salt and freshly ground pepper
  • Olive oil or butter (optional): For brushing bread
  • Red pepper flakes (optional): For heat
  • Garlic powder or fresh garlic (optional): For extra savoriness
  • Everything bagel seasoning (optional): For crunch and flavor
  • Fresh toppings (optional): Cherry tomatoes, radishes, microgreens, cilantro, parsley
  • Protein add-ons (optional): Eggs (fried, poached, or soft-boiled), smoked salmon, turkey bacon, cottage cheese, or feta

Instructions

  • Preheat the air fryer: Set to 375°F (190°C) for 2–3 minutes. Preheating helps the bread toast evenly and quickly.
  • Prep the bread: If you like extra crunch, lightly brush both sides with olive oil or spread a thin layer of softened butter. Not required, but delicious.
  • Toast the bread: Arrange slices in a single layer in the basket. Air fry for 3–5 minutes, flipping halfway, until golden and crisp. Thicker slices may need 1–2 extra minutes.
  • Mash the avocado: While the bread toasts, scoop the avocado into a bowl. Add a squeeze of lemon or lime, a pinch of salt, black pepper, and a pinch of red pepper flakes if you like. Mash with a fork until mostly smooth with a few chunks.
  • Add garlic and extras (optional): Stir in a small pinch of garlic powder or rub a cut garlic clove over the toasted bread for a subtle kick.
  • Assemble: Spread the avocado generously over the hot toast. Sprinkle with more salt and pepper to taste. Add everything seasoning, herbs, or sliced tomatoes if using.
  • Boost with protein (optional): Top with a jammy egg, fried egg, or a few ribbons of smoked salmon. Crumbled feta or cottage cheese adds extra creaminess.
  • Serve immediately: Enjoy while the toast is still crisp and the avocado is fresh.
