Prep the apples: Peel, core, and slice the apples into even 1/4-inch slices.
Place them in a medium bowl.
Season the filling: Add brown sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, cornstarch, and a pinch of salt to the apples. Toss until every slice looks glossy and evenly coated.
Make the crisp topping: In another bowl, combine oats, almond flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Add the cold butter cubes.
Use your fingers or a pastry cutter to work the butter into the dry ingredients until you have pea-sized crumbs. Stir in nuts if using.
Choose your dish: Use a small oven-safe baking dish or 6–7-inch cake pan that fits in your air fryer basket. Lightly grease it with butter or spray.
Assemble: Spread the apple filling evenly in the dish.
Sprinkle the oat topping over the apples, pressing it gently so it adheres but doesn’t compact too tightly.
Preheat the air fryer: Set the air fryer to 350°F (175°C) for 3 minutes to warm up. Preheating helps the topping brown better.
Cook: Air fry at 350°F (175°C) for 16–22 minutes, until the topping is deep golden and the apple juices are bubbling at the edges. Start checking at 15 minutes.
If the top browns too fast, tent it loosely with foil.
Rest: Let the crisp sit for 5–10 minutes. This helps the juices thicken and makes serving easier.
Serve: Spoon warm apple crisp into bowls. Top with ice cream, whipped cream, or a drizzle of maple syrup for extra indulgence.
